A Mother's Journey

The photographer Rene C. Byer won the Pulitzer 2007, the prestigious journalism award for a great photo essay entitled A mother's journey? (The journey of a mother) over the last few months of life for Derek, an American child dying of cancer, and the efforts of his mother, Cyndi French, single mother of five children.

The photographer and a reporter witnessed exception for months with all aspects surrounding their medical treatment and through words, photographs and videos attest to the progressive deterioration suffered by the child, and the havoc it causes cancer in the family dynamics and Dunedin Ancient Arts.

When Derek was diagnosed with neuroblastoma (a malignant tumor cancer common in children) his mother had to sell your business, send his youngest daughter aged 6 to live with his father, and was forced to neglect their eldest sons, began to have problems in school performance and even an abandoned home after a sour discussion. To overcome the costs of the disease, where he also worked occasionally, even washing cars.

The interview was published in the Daily Phoenix Bee and journalists sought to raise awareness about the harsh reality of childhood cancer in a country like the U.S., but technologically highly developed with public health coverage inadequate and deficient.

The film shows pain, anguish, anger, despair and helplessness but also courage, love, faith, courage and hope of a mother who renounces everything and everyone to accompany her son at that time.
